QS Alumni Public Seminar – January 2012

The first public seminar of the New Year organized by the QS Alumni Association was held on 5th January 2012. Dr. Bingunath Ingirige (PhD, MBA (AIT), BSc (QS) Hons, MRICS, PGCert, AIQS (SL), FHEA) from University of Salford, UK, made a presentation on Intranets and Extranets in Construction Projects. He is a team member of CIB task group 83 “e-Business in Construction”. Dr. Ingirige presented how effectively the construction sector can use the Internet, which is a public infrastructure, for closed sharing of information among project participant or members of an organization.

Annual Day Out of Quantity Surveying Alumni Association

14The Quantity Surveying Alumni Association had its Annual Day Out of the Members at Wijaya Holiday Resort at Thalagahahena Estate, Epitawala, Kiriella (Ratnapura) on Saturday 24th December 2011.

 

It was a fun time for everybody. Both members and their families enjoyed it. It was also a networking opportunity for all.

 

Members appreciated effort of Nishantha Wickramasinghe, the president, and Bernard Gunaratne, the secretary of the association for their continuing efforts of maintaining the cohesiveness of the QS graduates. A special thanks goes to Jayantha Dimbukkuwalage for organizing the event.

Sarasavi Gee Sisila 2011

The Building Economics Students Society (BESS) of University of Moratuwa staged the Annual Classical Musical Extravaganza "Sarasavi Gee Sisila" on Thursday 24th November 2011 evening. This was the 17th time it was staged since its start on 1994. The audiance had the pleasure in the performances by Master Victor Rathnayake, Visharada Amarasiri Peiris, Sunil Edirisinghe, Visharada Edward Jayakody, Visharada Deepika Priyadarshani and Karunarahtne Divulgane with music by National Broadcasting Coorperation Orchestra.

Mr. Indunil Seneviratne, Head of Department of Building Economics addressed the audiance. A number of alumni members were with the audiance, among them were the president and secretary of the QS Alumni. QS Alumni congratulates the current students and appreciates their efforts to keep up the traditions alumni made while they were students at the department.

QSAA Public Seminar on Service of Contractual Notices

Quantity Surveying Alumni Association of University of Moratuwa had organized a Public Seminar on Thursday the 29th of September 2011 afternoon at the premises College of Quantity Surveyors, Colombo. The resource person was Mr. Tilak Kolonne (BSc(QS)Hons, Dip Arb, CertAdj, FRICS, FIQSSL, ACIArb) who made a presentation on SERVICE OF CONTRACTUAL NOTICES IN CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTS. Then it followed a Questions and Answers session. The topic that were discussed during the event included:

• Purpose of notices

• Provisions in various Standard Forms of Contract

• Related Court Cases

• Practical Questions

The event has got attracted by a large group of Quantity Surveyors with about 90 participants.

A Workshop on QS Alumni Web

A workshop on using QS Alumni Web Site was held on Thursday 25th August 2011 at the premises of College of Quantity Surveying, Colombo 5.  The intention of the workshop is to introduce the features and facilities, explain how to use them effectively, and to discuss the future plans. The topics covered included the features of the QS Alumni website, membership options and previlages, How the website be effectively use in marketting the members and their competencies, the communication facilities and possible fund raising for its sustainable existance.

In the discussions followed, it was highlighted that active usage of the forum to discuss the theoritical/professional/practical matters will be the key to bring more visitors to the site and make the site popular among many others in the field to search for knowledge.
